On August 12, 2012 I went to the hospital as my bp had spiked super high and I was on watch due to gestational hypertension. The ob on call suggested an induction on Thursday the 16, as my body had been contracting regularly (showing up on monitors as "real" contractions) for two weeks (I was obviously exhausted) and was not progressing, my ultrasounds showed baby growing from 98%tile at 33 weeks to 45%tile at 35 weeks (no growth) and his movement had slowed (6 kicks in 5 mins to 6 kicks taking two hours with me poking at him) I knew and felt he needed to come sooner, so I voiced this. Thankfully the ob listened and my induction was scheduled for the 14th.
I went in on the 14th for my induction at 11am, I was 36 weeks and 5 days. Upon going to triage the resident came and spoke to me. She said I was "so far" from being 37 weeks and that inductions were not taken lightly and that they'd probably just send me for another ultrasound. I explained that my bp no longer came down and that this was not being done lightly. She said she'd speak to the ob that ordered it and get back to me.
At 1pm she came back saying they'd be doing my induction. I was checked and was only a finger dip dilated and then I was given my first dose of cervadil gel and told I'd be checked in 6 hours and given another dose if needed. I would then get an NST for at least an hour and a half to ensure baby wasn't in distress. The gel could be administered up to 3 times every 6 hours.
I was admitted so I could be monitored.
Here's when it all started to go "wrong"
My placenta was in the front so to do a NST was tricky. Most of my NST were not a problem and I laid in my side when they were done at my home. While the l&d nurse found it easier if I laid on my back to get his heart beat even though I said I'd much rather be on my side. While during one of my many NST my son flipped from the perfect position to sunny-side up causing back labour.
I walked (when I was allowed) to keep labour progressing and to stay comfortable. At approximately 11:30pm I still had not received
I was finally seen at 4:30am on Wednesday the 15th. I was checked again and then given another dose of gel. Within 15 minutes I was finally getting regular contractions. Although I was in back labour and getting tripling contractions (3 in a row) with only a 2 minute break in between them. I walked as I could, I leaned over the sink and swung my hips as needed and I would get on all fours as well in an attempt to get baby to flip again.
I couldn't stomach the thought of food but I kept drinking to stay hydrated as I hadn't gotten an iv yet (they respected that choice at least)
I was given another dose of gel and checked yet again.
I continued to get contractions often and be put on the NST every four hours for at least 30 minutes.
The contractions were so bad by early afternoon I tried the oxygen, it helped me get through a lot of my contractions along with counter pressure on my back.
At about 4pm I started to throw up every hour. I couldn't keep any fluid down and was starting to feel really weak. I asked my nurse for gravol so I could keep some fluids down. I was the informed they only dosed gravol with morphine. So I declined it.
I kept throwing up to the point it was only stomach bile and was feeling so weak. I again asked for just gravol and was told the same thing. So I gave in and got the shots.
I was able to get a little rest in between contractions as the gravol made me sleepy. I was also able to keep ice chips down.
At 8:30pm I went to the washroom and began to bleed heavily with large clots, I knew something was wrong. I told my nurse, who kept trying to tell me it was normal and possibly just my cervix dilating. I knew this wasn't the case.
I was then hooked upto the NST and no longer allowed to move unless I needed to use the washroom.
By 9pm the ob came to check me (when it had been a resident the entire time, I knew something was up) she said I was about 2.5cm dilated and my cervix was still really high up. She then proceeded to pull my cervix down and stretch me to 3cm to get me into a labouring room ASAP.
I was given an iv 12am, took two tried after they burst one of my veins.
I finally got into a labouring room at 1am when a new ob came and broke my water, it was at this time the on stated I needed an internal monitor. I then asked why it was needed, only to be told "cause the baby needs it" I kept asking why and was NEVER given a straight answer, just told the baby needed it. My husband and I talked for a bit, believing that it was needed for some reason and agreed.
I then got the worst contractions ever, wave after wave with no break at all and much more intense then before. The oxygen was no longer helping too much at all.
By 2am I asked for an epidural as I was so exhausted. I was checked and was about 5-6cmThe anesthesiologist came and was not helpful at all saying he couldn't guarantee it as he couldn't tell where it needed to go as he couldn't feel my spine too well. NOT what you need to hear when someone is about to shove a needle into your back. He then ordered my oxygen taken away from me (I was not impressed with this) I started to get a contraction and asked if he could wait until it was over. He said no need and proceeded to tell me not to move while I was in utter agony and getting poked.
During this time I expressed something wasn't right and that maybe we should discuss a c-section, it was denied.
After 45 mins the epi still had done nothing, I could feel everything. The anesthesiologist came back to offer a second one. I said no not to bother as I could feel everything and that there was no guarantee the second one would work. My hubby supported
me and said we didn't need another one, I had gotten the benefits as my bp had dropped to normal and baby had flipped into the correct position . He continued to offer and talk and not leave me alone after I kept saying no. I eventually gave in to a second to shut him up......he inserted the needle 7 times before he was satisfied where it was placed. This one took partially, I could still feel the pressure of contractions, feel the cold on my stomach when they checked it but everything was slightly dulled. I was able to get a little rest when the nurses weren't coming in and out of my room and checking on me and my bp.
At about 4am I was feeling a lot of pressure, the nurse checked my saying 10cm. I was also denied any fluids or ice chips, the nurse let it slip that the ob was sure I'd be having a section.
Ob came and checked, said 7-8cm I must have been contracting when the nurse checked and for no one else to check me. Shortly after the resident came and checked me even though the nurse told her the ob said not to.
At 5am I was checked again with no change. They said if there was no change soon they'd have to do oxytocin.
I was checked again at 5:30am with no change and put on oxytocin. They increased the dose every 30 mins
I was checked again at 9am, on full dose of oxy and was still 8cm.
At 10am things got even worse, babies heart rate was dipping even lower then it had been before. (It had been dipping ever contractions since the bleeding it turns out) I was checked again, I was 9cm with a bit of lip, for a few contractions the lip was rubbed back, then babies head was rubbed every contraction for an hour to keep it raised.
An hour later his heart was dipping even more and I wasn't dilating further. The nurses said we'd do a practise push or I'd be having a section. I told them I would be able to push! I pushed amazingly they said!
They called for the nicu, crash cart and a few other things at this time. I knew it was bad when my mom started to cry. I told my hubby to go be with get as I couldn't deal with her tears.
At 11:18am the ob came in, shook my hand and said we needed the vacuum. I shed a few tears then focused just on pushing and nothing else. Within one push his head and shoulders were pulled out. I felt myself tear badly but was still quiet. My baby was born at 11:24am. He came out with the cord wrapped tightly around his neck twice, they had to cut it and then unwrap from his neck. My son who was grey and purple was given straight to the nicu team. It felt like there was no one else in that room with 15 people (nicu team, ob, resident, student, my two nurses, my mom, husband and I)
Waiting for that cry killed me. I was stitched up and felt everything, once my baby cried I told them that I could feel it and it hurt. Only to be told I'd had an epi and it wasn't hurting.
I quickly delivered my placenta which was missing a piece (it had detached and that's what caused the bleeding and clots) it was also severely calcified, to the point the dr's said he probably wouldn't have made it another day or two. The lady who did my encapsulation also said even people at 42 weeks weren't as badly calcified as my placenta was.
I didn't get my baby until 45 minutes later.
I had wanted an all natural water birth with midwives. That obviously didn't happen
Our first week was also very bad but that's a whole other story
